September Long Ten Sleep Climbing Trip

August 31 - September 1

Let’s take advantage of the last long weekend of summer! The club is once again heading south to go rock climbing for two days in Ten Sleep Canyon, Wyoming, on the September long weekend (Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1, 2024). 

THIS IS AN INTERMEDIATE TRIP. No prior outdoor climbing experience is required; however, participants should be comfortable climbing at a 5.9 level. The trip is currently capped at 12 participants (participant number may increase).

Accommodations
Group camping will be reserved at Ten Sleep Rock Ranch for those wishing to stay with the group. Fees for this will be split equally amongst those camping, and will be collected at the time of the trip. For those not wishing to stay with the group, you will be responsible for arranging your own accommodations.

Gear
Participants are responsible for their own gear. Gear requirements include climbing shoes, a harness, belay device, and helmet. The club has a limited number of harnesses and helmets available at no cost to participants on a first come first served basis. Please indicate on your trip application if you wish to borrow club gear. A recommended packing list will be provided to confirmed trip participants. This is a U.S based trip, so a current passport will be necessary.

Travel and Food
Participants are responsible for their own transportation to Ten Sleep Canyon and to the climbing areas. People will typically carpool with other participants and this is usually arranged in the weeks leading up to the trip. Participants will be responsible for arranging this on their own. The trip leader may reach out to you prior to the trip to check in on your carpooling arrangements, as a limited number of vehicles are permitted at the campsites.

Participants are responsible for their own food. Ten Sleep Canyon has a small convenience store with limited supplies; you may wish to bring groceries with you/purchase once you cross the border.

Participants
This trip is open to participants 18 years of age and older. Participants must have a current ACC Great Plains Section membership. Age exceptions may be made at the discretion of the leaders, so please feel free to apply if you are not in this age category, and your application will be reviewed and considered. Sign up will be on a first come first served basis at the discretion of the trip leaders. As mentioned above, participants should be comfortable top-rope climbing at a 5.9 level.

Cost

Trip cost will be $50 per person. This does not include campsite fees.

  1. First and Last Name
  2. Phone number
  3. ACC Membership Number (must be registered with the Great Plains Section)
  4. Emergency contact information (name and number)
  5. Rock climbing experience (this doesn’t have to be long – grade you top rope, grade you lead, outdoor experience, etc. we use this information to form groups, crags we’ll climb at, and assign leaders)
  6. Indication if you would like to camp at Ten Sleep Rock Ranch
  7. Any gear you would like to borrow (helmet, harness, etc.)
  8. Any relevant medical information (allergies or medical conditions trip leaders should be aware of. This is kept confidential and is only collected in case of medical emergency)

Successful applicant confirmations will be sent out within the week after application. Please send any questions on the trip to Kristen Moore.  Further trip details will be circulated once participants are confirmed.

Trip Info & Guidelines

Guidelines For Trip Participants

All trips listed in the Great Plains Section’s trip schedule are coordinated by amateur volunteer hikers, skiers and climbers. When on a trip, participants must act in a manner that is safe and responsible and participants are expected to bring the equipment requested by the trip organizer. Participants should find out the requirements and demands of the trip well in advance by asking the organizer and researching the trip in guidebooks and other literature. You must be a member of the Great Plains Section of the Alpine Club of Canada to join a trip.

Further guidelines for participants
  • Be prepared to complete a Release of Liability (Waiver). Waiver Form
  • You must be a member of the Great Plains Section of the Alpine Club of Canada to join a trip.
  • Sign up for trips that will challenge you, but are not beyond your abilities. If unsure, ask the trip organizer and tell them your experience and fitness level. People inexperienced in the mountains should start with easier trips.
  • Learn about the trip before you attend (which route, number of kilometers, amount of vertical gain/loss, type of terrain, length of day, etc.).
  • Give as much notice as possible to the trip organizer if you are unable to go on the trip. There are often waiting lists of other members who would like to go. If you do not provide enough notice of cancellation for your spot to be filled, your trip deposit will not be refunded.
  • Ensure that you have the right equipment and that it is in good repair.
  • For winter trips, ensure that you are using a digital avalanche transceiver and that it is in good working order. Single antenna/analog transceivers are not acceptable.
  • Bring your helmet on all moderate and difficult scrambles and all climbing trips. Leaders may ask you to bring your helmet on certain ski trips as well.
  • Be prepared to contribute to the trip and carry part of the group gear (ropes, etc.).
Personal Insurance
In addition to the liability coverage that the ACC provides for its members when they are participating in ACC activities, the ACC sells, through TuGoTM Travel Insurance, personal insurance for trips.

As a broker for TuGo, the ACC offers Emergency Medical Insurance, Trip Cancellation Insurance, Baggage Insurance and more. These policies are available to all Canadians travelling outside their home province within Canada as well as internationally.

If you require medical attention while you’re traveling outside of your home province, or outside of Canada, your provincial health care plan may not cover you. The ACC’s trip insurance covers air ambulance, emergency medical and many other medical expenses. Climbing, skiing and other backcountry accidents are not exempted (as they are with many insurers).
